Red Clover Extract

A botanical rich in phytoestrogen isoflavones that helps manage vasomotor menopausal symptoms and support bone density.

What it is

Red Clover Extract is derived from the flowering tops of Trifolium pratense, a perennial legume native to Europe and Western Asia. In dietary supplements, standard extracts are standardized to contain 8% to 15% isoflavones (principally biochanin A, formononetin, genistein, and daidzein). These botanical isoflavones act as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), providing gentle estrogenic activity that supports women's physiological balance during perimenopause and menopause without altering systemic hormone levels.

Also known as: Trifolium pratense, Red Clover Isoflavones

What it does

  • Eases frequency and severity of menopausal hot flashes and night sweats.
  • Supports bone mineral density and structural integrity during hormonal transitions.
  • Promotes arterial elasticity and healthy blood lipid profiles in postmenopausal women.

Amplified by probiotics

Red Clover Extract contains methylated isoflavones, biochanin A and formononetin, which are inactive precursors requiring enzymatic demethylation and cleavage by gut bacterial enzymes (such as beta-glucosidases produced by Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species). Intestinal microbiota convert formononetin into daidzein and subsequently into equol, a highly bioactive metabolite with superior affinity for estrogen receptor beta (ER-beta). A healthy, balanced microbiome, fortified by microencapsulated probiotics, enhances equol producer status and increases systemic bioavailability of active phytoestrogens while reducing gut mucosal inflammation to optimize intestinal polyphenol uptake.

Typical dose

40–80 mg/day (standardized isoflavones)

The evidence

Evidence: moderate

Randomized double-blind controlled trials demonstrate that standardized red clover extract significantly reduces hot flash frequency in menopausal women compared to placebo (Gartoulla et al. 2014, Maturitas). Further clinical trials highlight positive effects on arterial stiffness and bone turnover markers in postmenopausal populations (Lipovac et al. 2012, Fitoterapia).

Safety & who should check first

Generally well tolerated in clinical trials up to 1 year. Women with hormone-sensitive conditions should consult a physician before use; avoid during pregnancy and lactation.
