What it is
Lactobacillus salivarius (Ligilactobacillus salivarius) is an indigenous lactic acid bacterium naturally abundant in human saliva, oral cavity, and intestinal tract. Produced through anaerobic fermentation and freeze-drying, L. salivarius is recognized for its rapid growth rate and high production of bacteriocins, lactic acid, and hydrogen peroxide. Formulated in Velobiotics supplements, L. salivarius is protected by patented MEP microencapsulation, shielding cells from gastric fluid for delivery to the intestine.

Lactobacillus salivarius provides rapid antimicrobial and acidifying synergy within probiotic formulations. Due to its fast doubling time, L. salivarius quickly colonises mucosal niches, secreting large quantities of L-lactic acid and salivaricin bacteriocins. This rapid acidification lowers luminal pH, immediately suppressing acid-sensitive bad bacteria and creating a favorable substrate environment for slower-growing Bifidobacteria species. L. salivarius also degrades proinflammatory bacterial endotoxins in the gut lumen, protecting the mucosal lining from immune overactivation. When paired with Lactobacillus acidophilus, it reinforces mucosal cell-to-cell tight junctions.
