Lutein

A dietary macular xanthophyll carotenoid that filters blue light and supports visual acuity and eye health.

What it is

Lutein is a non-provitamin A xanthophyll carotenoid extracted commercially from the flower petals of Tagetes erecta (marigold). In dietary supplements, it is formulated as free lutein or lutein esters suspended in oil or microencapsulated beadlets for enhanced stability. Lutein selectively accumulates in the macula lutea of the human retina, where it serves as an optical blue-light filter and localized singlet oxygen quencher protecting photoreceptor membranes.

Amplified by probiotics

As a lipophilic xanthophyll, dietary lutein depends on intestinal bile-salt micellar solubilisation for enterocyte uptake. Probiotic bacteria exhibiting bile-salt hydrolase (BSH) activity modify lumenal bile salt pools, optimizing lipid emulsification and micellar stability. Furthermore, probiotic fermentation generates short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that reinforce intestinal mucosal barrier tight junctions (such as claudin-1 and occludin). A healthy, non-inflamed gut epithelium optimizes scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI) transporter function on enterocytes, promoting efficient lutein absorption into chylomicrons for systemic transport to retinal and neural tissues.

Evidence: strong

The benchmark Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) clinical trial established that daily lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation significantly improves macular pigment density and reduces progression risk in age-related macular changes (AREDS2 Research Group 2013, JAMA). Long-term epidemiological follow-up confirms persistent visual function benefits (Chew 2022, JAMA Ophthalmol).

Safety & who should check first

Extremely well tolerated in human trials up to 20 mg/day; harmless skin yellowing (carotenodermia) can occur at very high intake. Safe during pregnancy and lactation at standard dietary levels.
