An essential nutrient vital for neurotransmitter synthesis, fetal neurodevelopment, cell membrane integrity, and liver lipid transport.
What it is
Choline is a water-soluble essential nutrient structurally related to B-complex vitamins. Commonly supplied as Choline Bitartrate in prenatal and daily health supplements, it serves as an indispensable building block for phosphatidylcholine (a major structural phospholipid in cell membranes) and acetylcholine (a key neurotransmitter for memory, mood, and muscle control). Choline is critical during pregnancy and lactation to support fetal neural tube closure, placental transfer, cognitive development, and hepatic lipotropic export.
Also known as: Choline Bitartrate, L-Choline
What it does
- Supports fetal neurodevelopment, brain structure, and neural tube integrity.
- Provides essential precursors for acetylcholine synthesis and cognitive function.
- Facilitates hepatic lipid transport to prevent liver fat accumulation.
Amplified by probiotics
Oral choline is absorbed in the small intestine via specific organic cation transporters (CTL1/SLC44A1). Excess unabsorbed choline reaching the colon can be fermented by dysbiotic bacteria into trimethylamine (TMA), which is oxidized by liver enzymes into trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite associated with cardiovascular risk. Microencapsulated probiotic strains (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) promote efficient upper intestinal nutrient absorption and foster a balanced gut microbiome that minimizes TMA-producing bacterial taxa. Simultaneously, probiotic-derived short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) strengthen the mucosal barrier and support hepatic lipotropic lipid metabolism, maximizing fetal and systemic nutritional benefits.
Typical dose
400–550 mg/day (adequate intake for adults and pregnant women)
The evidence
Evidence: strongEFSA scientific opinions and clinical research establish choline as an essential nutrient required for liver function, homocysteine metabolism, and fetal neurological development (EFSA NDA Panel 2016, EFSA J). Maternal choline supplementation during pregnancy significantly improves fetal placental function and child cognitive processing speeds (Caudill et al. 2018, FASEB J).

Safety & who should check first
Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) is 3,500 mg/day for adults. Highly safe during pregnancy and lactation. Excessive intake above UL may cause fishy body odor or mild GI upset.
